History Of Minimum Wage

Flashback to History

Thesis Statement: Minimum wage has changed enormously over time to be more beneficially to everyone.

Minimum wage is the lowest wage permitted by law or a special agreement. Minimum wage became a law in 1894 when New Zealand was the first to pass the law which covered all businesses and industries across the country. Australia was the second state to pass the Minimum wage law but they only covered six industries. In 1904, the minimum wage grew to cover 150 industries. In 1902, New South Wales and Western Australia passed their own minimum wage. Since Australia and New Zealand started minimum wage, other countries across borders was in thinking of starting minimum wage in their own countries.

In 1938, Franklin D. Roosevelt introduced minimum wage to the United States at 25 cents an hour, which in today's time would be $4 per hour. The minimum wage law was apart of the Fair Labor Standards Act which is known as FLSA. The FLSA also took part in youth employment standards, which is allowing teenagers 16 and older to apply for a job with a workers permit. The FLSA keeps track of "overtime pay, record keeping, and the standards for employees at all levels".

Although minimum wage started in 1938 in the United States, Massachusetts passed their own laws for women and children in 1912. Since the minimum wage started in the United States, it has been raised 22 times by 12 different presidents. In 1997, President Bill Clinton announced each state to set their own minimum wage rates. As a result, states started raising their minimum wage higher than the federal minimum wage.

In today's time the minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Labor activists would like Congress to raise minimum wage because of the negative effects it has on the economy.

  1. This is really interesting most of the times we just want to get pay better and we don't look at the history neither how much it has increased. Really interesting information but I'm wondering which president gave the highest raise?
